What does motorbike insurance cover?
What your motorbike insurance will cover will depend on the type of policy you choose. Any add-ons and extras you decide to include will also increase what’s covered under your motorbike insurance policy.
- Third-party only motorbike insurance (TPO): This is the minimum level of motorbike insurance legally required to drive on public roads in the UK. Third-party motorbike insurance is intended to cover the costs of any injury or damage you cause to others as a result of an at-fault accident. It will not cover the cost of repairing or replacing your own bike.
- Third-party, fire and theft motorbike insurance (TPF&T): This will include standard third-party cover with the added benefit of covering your own motorbike if it is stolen or damaged/written off as a result of fire. You still won’t be covered for your own bike in an at-fault accident.
- Comprehensive motorbike insurance: A fully comprehensive policy is the most comprehensive level of coverage a biker can take out in the UK. This level of coverage includes everything that’s covered by TPF&T with the added benefit of covering repairs and replacement of your own bike even if you are the at-fault driver. This type of insurance will also pay out if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, which isn’t covered by lower levels of coverage.
The type of motorbike insurance that will be best for you will depend on your individual coverage requirements and budget. Remember to compare multiple motorbike insurance quotes as sometimes a more comprehensive car insurance policy can be the cheaper option.
Motorbike Insurance Cover Extensions and Optional Extras
Motorbike insurance providers tend to also offer a wide range of optional cover. You can choose add-on options and extras to better tailor your coverage to your specific needs.
- Legal Expenses Insurance – Can provide cover to include legal advice and legal expenses for incidents relating to uninsured drivers, non-fault claims, personal injury disputes and other specified types of disputes.
- Breakdown Insurance – Can provide cover for costs associated with repairs and labour. Some policies may also cover accommodation costs if an emergency forces someone to spend the night in a hotel.
- Helmet & Leathers Insurance – Can provide cover for the costs involved with replacing your helmet and protective clothing in the event of a motorcycle accident so you can get back on the road as soon as possible.
- Loss of Keys Insurance – Can provide cover for locksmith expenses, replacement locks and keys, bike immobilizer replacement costs, vehicle hire costs, and transport costs if you’re stranded.
- Personal Accident Cover – Can provide cover for compensation in the event of accidental death, loss of sight, loss of limbs and road rage assault.
- Licence Defence – Can provide legal advice and help negotiating some of the most complex legal and police paperwork to help bikers to avoid making mistakes while contesting their conviction or fine.
- Excess Protection – Can provide cover to protect your excess in the event of a claim to ensure you retain your hard earned No Claims Bonus.
Cover can vary between different policies and providers which is why you should always compare motorbike insurance cover when you compare motorbike insurance prices.
