Home insurance in the UK typically includes two core areas of cover, one of which covers the home buildings structure, and one of which covers the home contents. Homeowners can choose to buy both from the same provider or buy the policies separately from different providers, and the simplest way to establish what is best for you is to compare home insurance quotes for both Buildings and Contents insurance.
Home Insurance Cover Sections
UK home insurance usually includes two core areas of cover:
- Home Buildings Insurance – this part of the policy includes the structure of the house as well as all fixtures and fittings, such as fitted kitchens, baths and showers, fitted cupboards, and fitted decorative elements. Outbuildings such as garages and garden sheds are included, but not all policies cover things like fences, gates, driveways, boundary fences, and swimming pools so it is worth checking for each quote you receive.
- Home Contents Insurance – as standard this would normally include everything within the home that belongs to the homeowner and which they would take with them when they moved.
- Homeowners Liability Insurance – Most policies also cover a certain amount of personal liability insurance. For example, if someone is injured whilst at your home and the you are found to be legally liable for their injury, your home insurance policy will usually cover the legal costs of defending the claim and any compensation award up to a specified limit.
Home Insurance Policy Cover
Whilst each specific policy wording can vary, most standard home insurance policies cover damage and loss that occurs due to the following causes:
- Fire, lightning, earthquake, explosion
- Subsidence, landslip, or heave
- Storms and floods
- Malicious damage
- Theft of property, or damage caused by attempted theft
- Leaking water tanks and pipes
- Oil leaks from heating systems
- Falling trees or tree branches
- Breakage of TV, radio, or satellite receivers
- Impact from an aircraft, vehicle, or animal
- Riot
For most policies, exclusions are things such as general wear and tear, costs of home maintenance, and damage or breakdown that occurs as a result of poor workmanship.
Home Insurance Cover Extensions and Optional Extras
Home insurance providers tend to also offer a wide range of optional cover. For example:
- Accidental Damage Cover – to include accidental to the home and/or its contents
- Personal Possessions Cover – to include personal items worn or carried about the person that are taken outside the home.
- Legal Expenses Cover – to include legal advice and legal expenses for incidents relating to personal injury disputes, property disputes, and other specified types of disputes.
- Identity Theft Cover – to provide financial compensation for costs incurred following an instance of identity theft.
- Home Emergency Cover – for costs associated with repairs and labour. Some policies may also cover accommodation costs if an emergency forces someone to spend the night in a hotel.
Cover can vary between different home insurance policies and providers which is why you should always compare home insurance cover when you compare home insurance prices.
